Maxwell Kirk Phillips, 18, was arraigned Monday, Aug. 24, in 92nd District Court on attempted murder, assault with intent to murder and assault with a dangerous weapon, according to court records cited by the Iron Mountain Daily News. WNMU also reported that Phillips was arraigned on the three charges. Bond was set at $500,000 cash or surety.

According to the same court reporting, a probable cause conference is scheduled for Sept. 1, followed by a preliminary examination Sept. 9. Phillips remains lodged in the Mackinac County Jail.

Michigan State Police troopers from the St. Ignace Post responded Friday, Aug. 21, to a report of a stabbing in Moran Township. The MSP Eighth District confirmed on X that troopers responded to a report that an 18-year-old man had been stabbed and that a suspect was in custody.

Police said Phillips and the other 18-year-old had been involved in a verbal altercation before the stabbing. The injured man was initially treated at Mackinac Straits Health System before being transferred to McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey for additional treatment, according to WLUC.

Authorities have not publicly identified the injured man or provided information about his condition following the transfer.

The St. Ignace Police Department assisted Michigan State Police. MSP said the investigation remained ongoing in its initial account.

Phillips is presumed innocent unless proven guilty.
