Marquette has a new breakfast spot. Earl E. Byrds, the retro diner that built a following over five years in Munising, opened its doors in downtown Marquette on Tuesday, Aug. 25.

The expansion marks the first time the American-style diner has operated outside its original home at 200 E. Superior St. in Munising. The Marquette location is open seven days a week from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m., serving the same large-portion breakfast and lunch menu that made the original a draw for tourists and locals.

Marketing director Alayna Marcus told WLUC the diner's retro look, filled with photos and vintage decor, is central to the brand's appeal.

"There's something about that little hole in the wall diner that people love," Marcus said. "And especially walking in and seeing all the photos and how cute it is and retro, it feels like a 'oh I found this.'"

Marcus said classic American diner food appeals broadly. "I think there's something about a classic American diner, it's like a safe food for people who may be picky or whatever," she said.

Earl E. Byrds also sells its own coffee grounds roasted at Gallery Coffee Company, a Munising-based roasting cafe. Both businesses are part of a family of Munising-based hospitality brands that includes restaurants, lodging and party stores.

The diner's Marquette Facebook page already shows early community interest, with 620 people talking about the new location before the restaurant has even held its grand opening event.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony is planned for September. A specific date has not been announced; the restaurant said details will be posted on its Facebook page when available.
