Eight Upper Peninsula county road agencies picked their favorite fall color drives for October.

The County Road Association of Michigan (CRA) published the guide Saturday, Sept. 12, compiling recommendations from road agencies in Chippewa, Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, Marquette and Ontonagon counties. Peak color across the UP is expected Oct. 3-18, according to the Soo Leader. The routes span from Brockway Mountain in the Keweenaw to the backroads near DeTour Village in Chippewa County.

"We all know Michigan has a lot to offer, and seeing the color explosion of the changing leaves from one of our county roads makes a fun, fulfilling drive through Michigan," Denise Donohue, CRA CEO, said in the announcement.

Keweenaw County leads with seven routes, headlined by Brockway Mountain Drive. That 8.8-mile road climbs to 1,320 feet above sea level along a ridge between Eagle Harbor and Copper Harbor. It joined the National Register of Historic Places in July 2017. Other Keweenaw picks include Lac La Belle Road, Gratiot Lake Road, Mohawk-Gay Road, Eagle Harbor Road, Cliff Drive and Five Mile Point Road.

Marquette County offers two routes: Triple A off County Road 510 in Big Bay and M-35 from County Road 480 to Gwinn.

Gogebic County lists six drives, including Black River Road to Black River Harbor, Lake Road from Ironwood to Little Girls Point and Superior Falls, and Thousand Island Lake Road from US-2 to Sylvania Wilderness Park.

Houghton County recommends Covered Drive Road, Freda Road and Calumet Waterworks Road. The Keweenaw Convention & Visitors Bureau notes that Keweenaw-area colors typically peak between the last week of September and the first two weeks of October.

Dickinson County highlights Kramer Drive on the north side of Iron Mountain and Metropolitan Road near Felch.

Iron County suggests four routes, including the Ottawa Lake Road/Hagerman Lake Road loop and the Pentoga Trail along Chicagon Lake to the Brule River.

Chippewa County lists North and South Caribou Lake Roads near DeTour Village, Gogomain Road from Goetzville to Pickford, Lakeshore Drive from Brimley to M-123 and Salt Point Road from M-28 to Lakeshore Drive.

Ontonagon County recommends one route. South Boundary Road runs from Presquile to Ontonagon.
