A dog died in a house fire on Marquette’s east side early Tuesday, Oct. 27. All residents escaped, and no human injuries were reported.

Firefighters responded to the 1300 block of North Front Street and arrived within four minutes of dispatch, according to a Marquette City Fire Department release reported by WBUP. They found smoke and flames on the first floor of a two-story home.

Residents were already outside when crews arrived but told firefighters pets remained inside. Residents rescued one dog, and firefighters rescued three cats. A second dog did not survive, WNMU reported.

Additional firefighters were requested, and utility companies were notified to shut off service to the property.

The department said crews controlled the flames within about 10 minutes of arrival. Firefighters completed their initial search within 15 minutes, confirming no one remained inside, according to WZMQ.

Crews continued searching the building, checking for remaining fire and protecting belongings. The department recorded an official control time of approximately 4:05 a.m. Firefighters remained at the property until investigators arrived around 5:45 a.m., according to the release reported by WBUP.

The fire’s origin and cause were under investigation as of the department’s Oct. 27 release.

Marquette city police, the Marquette Township and Chocolay Township fire departments, UP Health System EMS and the Marquette Board of Light & Power assisted with the response.
