Single-lane traffic begins Tuesday, Sept. 8, on US-41 near Keweenaw Bay. The Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) is spending about $837,000 to repair the bridge over the Little Carp River in Baraga County.

The project is expected to run through Saturday, Nov. 28, according to an MDOT press release issued Thursday, Sept. 3. During that stretch, temporary traffic signals will control one lane of alternating traffic across the bridge.

MDOT described the Sept. 8 date as tentative, meaning the start could shift.

The work targets the bridge's wingwalls, the retaining structures that hold back soil on either side of the span. Crews will stabilize the wingwalls using soil nails, then apply a concrete facing. They will also stabilize the surrounding slope with riprap, loose stone placed to prevent erosion.

MDOT said the repairs are meant to extend the bridge's usable life and increase safety for motorists. The closest communities to the work site are Keweenaw Bay and Assinins, according to the department.

The project is classified as a Superior Region effort. MDOT's Upper Peninsula social media account, @MDOT_UP, posted the announcement on Sept. 3.

MDOT estimates the investment will directly and indirectly support seven jobs, based on economic modeling.
