Negaunee's girls tennis team rolled past rival Ishpeming 8-0 on Aug. 25, sweeping every flight without dropping a set in the Miners' first home meet of the season.

The win pushed Negaunee to 4-0 on the young season, according to the Mining Journal. The Miners lost just 17 games across seven contested matches. Ishpeming did not field a No. 4 doubles pairing, giving Negaunee's Emme Niemi and Chloe Wommer a win by default.

The most lopsided result came at No. 4 singles, where Katie Carlson posted a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Ishpeming's Rachel Ricketts. Not a single game went the Hematites' way.

At the top of the lineup, No. 1 singles player Stella Lenten beat Ishpeming's Sophia Nerlfi 6-1, 6-4 in the tightest match of the afternoon. Addie Chapman handled Frankie Stetson 6-2, 6-2 at No. 2 singles, and Lucy Rogers topped Camryn Miller 6-1, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Negaunee's doubles teams matched the singles dominance. Paige O'Donnell and Olivia Richards beat Ishpeming's Charlee Fredy and Stella Nerlfi 6-1, 6-0 at No. 1 doubles. Maia Brunette and Aubrey Harper won 6-0, 6-2 over Camby Gauthier and Sophie Mahoski at No. 2, and Bree Helppi and Audrey Hahn closed out No. 3 doubles 6-2, 6-0 against Anja Laitinen and Callie Nelson.

Head coach Megan Kerkela said the Miners' aggressive approach paid off.

"We focused on being a little more aggressive ... and overall executed that quite well," Kerkela told the Mining Journal via email. She added that the team knew Ishpeming had strong athletes across its roster but said the Miners were ready for the challenge.

Kerkela also pointed to the team's development, noting this is a young roster that is rounding into form four meets into the season. She said many of her players are starting to find their groove and hit the ball well, a sign the early-season work is translating to match play.

Negaunee hosts Gwinn at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 1, then welcomes Westwood at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2. Ishpeming hosts Munising at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 2.
