NMU students now have access to a new banking branch on campus.
President Chris Olsen and April Clobes, president and CEO of Collegiate, AlumniFi and MSU Federal Credit Union, cut the ribbon Monday, Aug. 24, on a new banking branch inside the Northern Center in Marquette. The branch is the product of a partnership between Northern Michigan University and two MSUFCU-backed platforms: Collegiate, which serves current students, and AlumniFi, which targets alumni.
The branch currently offers ATM access, with in-person financial services coming soon. Once fully operational, it will provide checking and savings accounts and loans, according to NMU.
For NMU administrators, the financial literacy programming attached to the branch mattered more than the convenience banking alone.
Starting in September, members will be able to access seminars, webinars and educational programs through the FinStart app, all aimed at building financial skills. The bank will also host on-campus events throughout the academic year.
"You create the good financial base when they're a student at the university … and then having that seamless transition as students go into the after-life of college, which is becoming alumni of the university, and making that as seamless as possible," NMU Executive Vice President for Finance and Administration Gavin Leach said at the ceremony. "I think this will be a great partnership."
Clobes said the partnership's distinguishing feature is education, not just account access. She told attendees the organizations are there to explain how the system of money works and to teach students how financial decisions made now can follow them through life.
The partnership was first announced June 18 by AlumniFi, which described it as an effort to expand access to financial education and modern banking tools for students, faculty, staff and alumni.
MSUFCU, headquartered in East Lansing, serves more than 400,000 members through 35 branches and holds over $8.49 billion in assets.
NMU’s fall 2025 enrollment report showed 7,386 students. The university has not yet released its fall 2026 10th-day enrollment figures.
