Seven candidates for the Marquette City Commission will take voter questions at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, at the Lakeview Arena Citizen's Forum. The League of Women Voters of Marquette County is hosting the event, the first of two forums before the Tuesday, Nov. 3, election.

The seven candidates running for three commission seats are Margaret Brumm, Kevin Clegg, Mark Curran, Ross Johnson, Marcella Krupski, Matthew Luttenberger and Paul Schloegel.

The Marquette City Election Board confirmed July 23 that seven candidates filed for the three seats by the July 21 deadline. Each was required to submit petitions with at least 25 registered voter signatures or pay a $100 filing fee, according to city election board records.

At least two of the candidates have recent records of public engagement on county issues. Mark Curran spoke at the Marquette County Board of Commissioners meeting on June 16 in support of a resolution to explore recommissioning the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base. Margaret Brumm addressed the same meeting, commenting on a FOIA matter and a cigarette butt-recycling program, according to county board meeting minutes.

A second forum will take place at 6 p.m. at the Ishpeming High School Auditorium, covering races for Ishpeming mayor and city council. The date for the Ishpeming forum has not been announced.

Brett Argall and Jason Chapman are running for Ishpeming mayor. Three candidates are seeking one group of city council seats: William Anderson, Kurt Kipling and Collin Fleury. Three more are running for a separate group of council seats: Claurea Demarest, Andrea Jackson and Justin White.

The forums are not debates. Each candidate answers the same questions submitted by residents, with no cross-talk or rebuttal, the League of Women Voters said in a posting reported by The Mining Journal.

Both events will be live-streamed on the League of Women Voters of Marquette County YouTube channel. Residents can submit questions in advance at lwvmqt.org/contact/ or ask them in person.

Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.
