Snyders Drug Store will close its Negaunee pharmacy Sept. 11 and its general store Oct. 16, the company confirmed Wednesday, Sept. 2.
The independently owned Upper Peninsula chain posted a statement on Facebook to address what it called rumors spreading on social media about both its Negaunee and Ishpeming locations. The Ishpeming store is not closing.
WBUP/WJMN first reported the closure and the company's response to the rumors.
The Negaunee store at 390 US-41 will shut down in two phases, according to the company's website. The pharmacy fills its last prescriptions Friday, Sept. 11. The general store side stays open through Friday, Oct. 16, giving customers more than a month to pick up non-prescription items after the pharmacy goes dark.
That gap matters for anyone who relies on the Negaunee location for medications. Snyders said it is notifying affected customers directly and that staff will help patients transfer their prescription services before the pharmacy closes. Customers with questions can call the Negaunee store at (906) 475-9967 or contact another Snyders location.
The company's Ishpeming store at 1330 US-41 will continue operating with store and pharmacy hours of 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., according to the website. That location is the nearest Snyders option for Negaunee residents who need to move their prescriptions.
In its Facebook post, Snyders said it had heard "quite a few rumors on social media" and wanted to clear them up "clearly and categorically." The company said its Ishpeming location on the highway was not closing and called the Negaunee decision difficult, saying it was based on business models specific to that store.
Snyders said it appreciated the Negaunee community but had to act on the business considerations unique to the location. Company officials did not detail what those considerations were.
The chain operates 10 pharmacy locations across the Upper Peninsula, including stores in Marquette, Newberry, Iron River, Harvey and Gwinn, according to its website. That count will drop to nine once the Negaunee pharmacy closes Sept. 11.
Customers who need to transfer prescriptions can reach the Ishpeming store at (906) 485-5592.
