A 45-year-old Houghton woman faces three misdemeanor charges after she crossed into oncoming traffic on US-41 and struck two motorcyclists, killing both, on Wednesday, Aug. 5.

The Houghton County Prosecutor's Office charged Sze Wenn Tiang with two counts of moving violation causing death and one count of operating a vehicle with an expired license, according to the Daily Mining Gazette, which reported on a press release from Houghton County Prosecutor Dan Helmer. Tiang was arraigned Tuesday, Aug. 18, in 97th District Court and was lodged in the Houghton County Jail as of midday Tuesday, Aug. 18.

The victims were identified as Kimberly Ann Wooldridge, 36, and Raymond Alton Miller, 65, both of Rock Hill, South Carolina. Miller was originally from Marenisco.

Michigan State Police troopers from the Calumet Post were dispatched to the scene at approximately 12:30 p.m. Aug. 5 on US-41 near Golf Course Road in Osceola Township. According to the Keweenaw Report, Tiang was driving south on US-41 in an SUV when she failed to see a pickup truck stopped ahead of her to make a left turn onto Golf Course Road. To avoid rear-ending the truck, she swerved into the northbound lane and struck the two motorcyclists head-on. Both were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two children were also in Tiang's SUV at the time. All occupants of the vehicle were evaluated by first responders and released.

Helmer said in the release that the charges were based on the Michigan State Police investigation and filed after consultation with investigators and members of the victims' families, according to Upper Michigan's Source. All three counts are misdemeanors. Each moving-violation-causing-death count carries a maximum one-year sentence; the expired license charge carries up to 90 days.

Both lanes of US-41 south of Calumet were closed for a period on Aug. 5 as a result of the crash.

Tiang is presumed innocent unless proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt. No future court date has been announced.
