A 28-year-old seasonal worker from Jamaica faces a felony charge after a crash on the Mackinac Bridge that seriously injured two people.
Redane Smith was arraigned Thursday, Sept. 24, in Mackinac County's 92nd District Court on one count of reckless driving causing serious impairment of a body function, the Daily Press reported. His bond was set at $100,000 cash or surety. Smith remained in the Mackinac County Jail as of the arraignment, according to WNMU.
The charge carries a penalty of up to five years in prison and a fine between $1,000 and $5,000 under Michigan law (MCL 257.626).
Michigan State Police (MSP) said speed and alcohol are believed to be factors in the crash. MSP said additional charges may be requested pending the ongoing investigation and review by the Mackinac County Prosecuting Attorney's Office.
MSP is also investigating whether other drivers were operating vehicles recklessly on the bridge at the time.
The crash happened at approximately 2:55 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 23, on the southbound lanes of I-75 on the Mackinac Bridge. Troopers from the MSP St. Ignace Post responded.
According to the preliminary investigation, multiple vehicles passed through the toll booths on southbound I-75, then quickly accelerated and began driving at high speeds as they exited the toll area. The collision occurred near an active construction zone where southbound traffic was restricted to a single lane. One driver struck the rear of another vehicle.
Two people sustained serious injuries. Two others suffered non-life-threatening injuries. All four were treated at a local hospital. The bridge was temporarily closed during the investigation.
Agencies assisting MSP at the scene included the Mackinac Bridge Authority, the Michigan Department of Transportation, Mackinac County Emergency Management, St. Ignace Police Department, Mackinaw City Police Department, Mackinac County Sheriff's Office, Cheboygan County Sheriff's Office, Straits Area EMS, St. Ignace Fire and Rescue, Chippewa County Dispatch and CCE Dispatch, according to the Daily Press.
WNMU reported a probable cause conference is scheduled for Monday, Oct. 5, in 92nd District Court, with a preliminary examination set for Tuesday, Oct. 13. The Mackinac County Prosecuting Attorney's Office has not made a public statement about the case.
