A 76-year-old Marquette man died Thursday, Aug. 13, after his motorcycle collided with a passenger car at the intersection of 5th Street and Avenue B in KI Sawyer.

Forsyth Township police were dispatched to the scene at approximately 4:24 p.m. Aug. 13, according to a press release from the department. The motorcycle operator was transported to UP Health System Marquette, where he died from his injuries.

The intersection sits in the former K.I. Sawyer Air Force Base area of Forsyth Township in Marquette County.

The man's name has not been released. Police said the investigation is ongoing and the delay allows for family notification.

No information has been released about the condition of the passenger car's driver.

Multi-agency response

The crash drew a large emergency response from six agencies. Forsyth Township EMS & Fire, UPHS-Marquette EMS, Michigan State Police, the Marquette County Sheriff's Office, the Michigan State Police Accident Investigation Team and Heavy Hooker Towing all assisted at the scene.

The MSP Accident Investigation Team's involvement indicates the crash is being treated as a serious fatal collision requiring specialized reconstruction, WZMQ reported.

Recent UP motorcycle fatalities

The death is the latest in a series of fatal motorcycle crashes across the Upper Peninsula this summer. A two-rider fatal crash occurred in Osceola Township in Houghton County on Aug. 5, a solo motorcycle fatality was reported in Keweenaw County on Aug. 4, and another motorcyclist died in Skandia Township in Marquette County in July, according to MLive.

Police have not announced a timeline for releasing the victim's name or completing the investigation. No press conference or follow-up statement has been scheduled.
