Marquette police arrested a man Friday, Sept. 18, after finding a device reported to be a pipe bomb on the 500 block of Rock Street. The man was arrested on suspicion of a five-year felony charge, police said, and a misdemeanor assault charge.

The Marquette Police Department responded to a 911 call at approximately 11:45 a.m., according to WLUC. The call came from an open line where an altercation could be heard.

Officers arrived and determined an assault had occurred. They also learned the suspect had possessed a device reported to be a pipe bomb.

Police found the device outside the residence. The area was taped off, and a portion of the 500 block of Rock Street was closed to both vehicle and pedestrian traffic. Police advised people to stay clear of the area but did not recommend evacuating nearby homes, WZMQ reported.

The Michigan State Police Bomb Squad was called in from Grayling to assess the device. The bomb squad arrived around 5:45 p.m. Friday and rendered the device safe, Marquette police said in a statement, according to WLUC. Police said the area is safe and poses no threat to the community; it remains unclear whether the device was confirmed to be an operational explosive, according to WZMQ.

The suspect was arrested and lodged at the Marquette County Jail. He was arrested on suspicion of sending an explosive with intent to frighten, a felony under Michigan Compiled Laws Section 750.204 that police said carries up to five years in prison. He also faces a misdemeanor assault charge punishable by up to 93 days of incarceration.

The suspect's name has not been released. Police said the name will be made public after arraignment, according to WZMQ.

No arraignment date has been announced. It remains unclear whether Rock Street has since reopened to traffic.
