Marquette Senior High School's girls tennis team closed its dual-meet season with a 6-2 win over Kingsford on Tuesday, Sept. 22, sweeping all four doubles flights at the Sentinels' courts, the Mining Journal and Upper Michigan's Source reported.

The victory came during Homecoming week, and head coach Karl Thomsen said his players stayed locked in despite the distractions. Senior Nora Skytta stood out at No. 3 singles, beating Kingsford's Aubrey Belmore 6-2, 7-5 in what Thomsen called the final dual meet of her career.

Thomsen told the Mining Journal that Skytta "played one of her strongest matches of the year," hitting the ball where she wanted in the first set. When Belmore elevated her game in the second set, Skytta raised her own level of play in response.

Sydney Kuhl added a win at No. 4 singles, defeating Chloe Lanning 6-3, 6-4. Kingsford took the top two singles flights. Aubrie Moore blanked Stella Dehlin 6-0, 6-0 at No. 1, and Maddy Sleik topped Kirra Longtine 6-3, 6-2 at No. 2.

Doubles made the difference.

Eva Kentala and Charlotte Thomsen earned a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) win at No. 1 doubles over Mira Johnson and Kylee Woodard, with the second set going to a tiebreaker. Eva Dewitt and Charlye Swajanen won 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. Lola Rink and Morgan Downey cruised 6-1, 6-1 at No. 3.

At No. 4 doubles, Grace Jandreau and Brynn Helman won 6-1, 6-3 over Claire Rutter and Alaysa Bacon. Thomsen praised the pair's bounce-back after a stretch of tight matches, citing their confidence and aggressiveness.

Marquette followed the Kingsford win by capturing the Great Northern Conference (GNC) girls tennis title on Wednesday, Sept. 23, according to WZMQ 19. No individual results from the conference meet were available.

The Sentinels turn their attention next to the MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division 1 Finals, set for 10 a.m. next Wednesday, Sept. 30, at the Negaunee Miners' courts. The Sentinels' full schedule and results are posted on Marquette's athletics site.
