The United Way of Marquette County will launch its annual fundraising campaign with a new Oktoberfest-style event at Ore Dock Brewing Co. on Sunday, Sept. 27.
WLUC first reported the event Sept. 21. The inaugural "Steins for Good" fundraiser runs from 1 to 5 p.m. at the Marquette brewery, according to the Mining Journal.
Andrew Rickauer, executive director of the United Way of Marquette County, told WLUC the event doubles as the nonprofit's biggest annual fundraiser and the start of its yearly campaign.
"It's a great new event; it's our largest fundraiser," Rickauer said. "Steins for Good, just an Oktoberfest for a cause, trying to bring the community together for a good time to raise funds and raise awareness for the community."
The afternoon lineup includes a stein-holding competition, a pretzel-eating contest, a frozen shirt challenge and a costume contest, the Mining Journal reported. The Knockabouts will play live music. Commemorative mugs will also be available.
Funds raised at the event support the United Way's network of more than 25 partner agencies across Marquette County, Rickauer told WLUC. Those partners include the Janzen House, a 501(c)(3) organization at 146 W. Spring St. in Marquette that provides services to people facing housing crises and homelessness. The Women's Center, also based in Marquette, provides services to victims and survivors.
The United Way has not announced a dollar goal for this year's campaign. No end date for the campaign has been published.
Steins for Good caps an Oktoberfest weekend in downtown Marquette, where Blackrocks Brewery is holding its own Oktoberfest event Saturday, Sept. 26, from noon to 11 p.m., according to the Mining Journal. The event is the first of its kind for the United Way, which typically holds its campaign launch in a different format, according to Rickauer's comments to WLUC.
