A 50-year-old Calumet man died after crashing his pickup into two homes on School Street. Michigan State Police said a medical emergency behind the wheel, not crash injuries, is the suspected cause of death.

The MSP Calumet Post released its preliminary findings Monday, Aug. 31, one day after the crash. The driver was heading eastbound on School Street near Hecla Street in Calumet Township around 3:53 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, when he experienced the medical emergency, state police said.

His truck left the road and struck an attached garage on a home on the north side of School Street. The driver then put the truck in reverse, crossed the road and hit an attached garage on a second home on the south side, according to MSP.

A trooper and a first responder pulled the driver from the vehicle and attempted CPR. He was transported to Aspirus Keweenaw Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

State police said the driver's death is suspected to have resulted from the medical emergency rather than from injuries in the crash. The nature of the medical emergency has not been disclosed.

No one inside either home or elsewhere was injured.

As we reported Monday, Aug. 31, a portion of School Street was closed Sunday evening while first responders investigated. The cause of the crash and the driver's condition were unknown at that time.

State police have not released the driver's name. The investigation remains ongoing.

Calumet Township Fire and Rescue, the Laurium Police Department and the Houghton County Sheriff's Department also responded to the scene, WLUC reported.
