Families in Marquette and Ishpeming have a new option for pediatric care after UP Health System added a physician to its children's medicine team.
Isabella Comsa, DO, joined UP Medical Group | Marquette Pediatrics and is accepting new patients at the clinic at 1414 W. Fair Ave., Suite 226, in Marquette, the health system announced on Wednesday, Aug. 5. She will also see patients at UP Health System – Bell in Ishpeming, giving families across the central Upper Peninsula a closer option for well-child visits, immunizations and sick-day appointments.
Comsa is a Michigan native who earned her bachelor's degree in human biology from Michigan State University and her Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from MSU's College of Osteopathic Medicine. She completed her pediatric residency at Corewell Health William Beaumont University Hospital in Royal Oak, where she served as chief resident in her final year of training.
Her clinical focus includes newborn care, routine immunizations, adolescent health, developmental screenings and management of chronic conditions such as asthma and eczema.
"I appreciate the tight-knit communities, the natural beauty of the area and the pace of life in the Upper Peninsula," Comsa said in the health system's announcement. "UP Health System is welcoming and allows me to serve a large area while using my full scope of practice as a pediatrician."
The hire comes as rural Michigan faces a widening gap in physician availability. The state is projected to be short at least 800 primary care doctors by 2030, according to the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine, as reported by the Michigan Independent. Rural areas have roughly 15 physicians per 10,000 residents, compared with 42 per 10,000 in urban areas, according to a March 2026 Bridge Michigan op-ed by state Sen. Jim Runestad.
UPHS – Bell in Ishpeming has been experiencing limited walk-in availability at its Express Care clinic since July, underscoring ongoing provider capacity pressures in the area. The two hospitals operate under unified leadership after Market CEO Tonya Darner took over both facilities in June 2025.
