The victims were a 65-year-old man and a 36-year-old woman. Their names have not been released pending notification of their families.
What MSP says happened
According to MSP's preliminary investigation, a 45-year-old woman was driving an SUV southbound on U.S. 41 with two children as passengers. She did not see a pickup truck stopped ahead of her in the southbound lane, waiting to turn onto Golf Course Road.
To avoid rear-ending the truck, the driver crossed into the northbound lane, where the SUV struck the two motorcyclists head-on. Both riders were killed in the collision.
The crash site is located south of Calumet and Laurium on U.S. 41.
SUV occupants evaluated, released
The SUV driver and her two children were evaluated at the scene by EMS and released without being transported to a hospital.
Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including Mercy EMS, Calumet Township Fire and Rescue, Michigan State Police and the Houghton County Sheriff's Office, according to TV6 News. Lt. Ashley Miller of the Michigan State Police confirmed crash details to TV6 by phone on Aug. 5.
No charges announced
As of Thursday, Aug. 6, MSP had not released the identities of the motorcyclists or the SUV driver. The agency has not indicated whether the driver will face charges.
