Pickford and St. Ignace put perfect records on the line Friday, Sept. 18, when the 2-0 Panthers visit the 3-0 Saints for a 7 p.m. eight-player football kickoff in St. Ignace.
The two Eastern Upper Peninsula rivals have combined for 204 points through five games, the Soo Leader reported. Neither team has lost this season.
St. Ignace quarterback Caden Lester has been the Saints' engine. In a Week 3 win over Newberry, the senior completed 9-of-11 passes for 129 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for 85 yards on 10 carries, according to a Soo Leader recap of that game. Against Rapid River, Lester threw for 119 yards and a score and added 58 rushing yards.
"One of the things we've got to make sure of is Lester," Pickford head coach Josh Rader said. "He's a good quarterback for St. Ignace, and we can't let him go wild on us."
Lester isn't working alone. Fullback Jed Brady ran nine times for 123 yards and two touchdowns in the Newberry win, and wide receiver Colt Fettig scored on a reception and an 85-yard kickoff return. The Saints carry just 11 players on their varsity roster, according to a preseason report in the Soo Leader, making depth a constant concern.
Pickford counters with its own firepower. In a 55-6 rout of Rudyard, quarterback Carter Rye went 7-of-9 for 133 yards and three touchdowns. Tyler Browne rushed for 111 yards and two scores, Mason Andrzejak added 72 yards and a touchdown, and Caden Chromy hauled in a 50-yard scoring catch. Six Panthers found the end zone that night.
The Panthers opened the year with a 48-14 win over North Dickinson, according to the Mining Journal's Week 1 scores roundup. A scheduled Sept. 11 game against Brimley fell through when the Bays backed out, giving Pickford an unplanned bye week before Friday's matchup.
Rader said ball control will be critical to keeping St. Ignace's offense on the sideline. St. Ignace head coach Mike Shepard pointed to defensive communication as his team's biggest key, saying his defensive ends will face the toughest assignment of the night.
The teams met last season, with Pickford winning 60-30. Lester threw for more than 400 yards in that game, and the Saints scored five touchdowns in the loss.
Shepard said he does not expect a blowout Friday and believes the game will benefit both programs regardless of the outcome.
Pickford hosts Newberry on Sept. 25, while St. Ignace travels to Indian River Inland Lakes the same night, per the 2026 UP football schedule.
