Drivers heading south on Park Street in Ishpeming must detour onto Second Street from Iron Street while crews push to finish watermain installation on Third Street by Thursday, Aug. 13, the city said in its weekly project update.
The detour has been in effect since at least July 21, when crews began stripping asphalt on Third Street for watermain and storm drain installation. The route sends southbound traffic from Park Street to Second Street between Michigan and Empire streets before rejoining Third.
The multi-street water and sewer project, active since early July, is wrapping up work on several blocks and advancing on others. Empire Street is fully open to traffic after crews finished laying and grading gravel. Douglas and Dawson streets have had all service connections completed.
Third Street remains the most active construction zone. In addition to the watermain, crews have been installing storm drains there since late July. Once the watermain is in place Thursday, workers will connect individual services and lay gravel before reopening the road.
Streets still under construction
Salisbury Street crews are installing sewer mainline, though the road remains open to traffic. On Angeline and Terrace streets, watermain installation will continue through the week.
Main Street's watermain is in the ground, with service connections scheduled throughout the week. Johnson Street is in the same position — watermain done, service hookups starting.
The project spans more than a dozen streets, including New York and Bluff streets, which were completed in July. Work includes watermain replacement, sewer mainline installation and storm drain upgrades.
The city asked drivers to allow extra travel time in affected areas and give workers space when passing through construction zones. No named city official is attributed in the updates, which are posted as unsigned institutional notices.
No overall project completion date or total budget has been published. The city posts weekly progress updates at ishpemingcity.org.
