A man was found dead down an embankment along the Iron Ore Heritage Trail in Marquette on Saturday, Aug. 8, and police are asking anyone with information to call (906) 228-0400.

The Marquette Police Department is classifying the case as an unwitnessed death investigation, meaning no one saw the events leading to the man's death and investigators must piece together what happened through evidence and public tips.

A passerby discovered the unresponsive man around 5 p.m. near Wilson Street and alerted authorities, according to MyUPNow.com, citing a Marquette Police Department press release. Officers were directed down an embankment south of the trail, where the man had been found off the path.

First responders immediately began lifesaving measures. The man was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Marquette City Fire Department and UP Health System-Marquette EMS assisted during the emergency response, WNMU-FM reported. TV6 & FOX UP also confirmed the death Monday, Aug. 10.

The Iron Ore Heritage Trail is a multi-use recreational path that runs through Marquette. The section near Wilson Street sits along the trail's route through the city's south side, where the embankment drops off below the path's grade.

The Marquette Police Department has not released the man's identity. The cause of death remains under investigation, and no additional details had been made public as of Monday, Aug. 10. No timeline for further updates has been announced.
