A 67-year-old man died and another man suffered severe burns in a mobile home fire on M-35 in Negaunee Township Monday night, Oct. 5, according to a Michigan State Police release reported by WLUC.
Negaunee Township Fire Chief Jeff Kontio said the home was fully engulfed when crews arrived, MyUPNow reported. According to the Michigan State Police release reported by WLUC, one man had escaped before troopers arrived and told them another man remained inside.
Kontio told WLUC that crews were told there were possibly two occupants still inside when they received the call. He said the home was fully involved when they arrived.
Emergency crews responded Monday evening. MyUPNow reported a response around 8:30 p.m., while WLUC reported initial calls around 8:45 p.m.
A bystander told MyUPNow reporter Schyler Perkins they tried to enter the burning home to help but were forced back by extreme heat.
Multiple fire departments and law enforcement agencies responded to the scene. MyUPNow identified Negaunee Township Fire, Negaunee City Fire, Chocolay Township Fire and Michigan State Police (MSP) among the responders. WLUC's reporter also observed the Negaunee Police Department, Marquette Township Fire & Rescue and the Negaunee Township Water Department at the fire.
The man who escaped was hospitalized for treatment of severe burns. Troopers and firefighters found the 67-year-old man dead inside after extinguishing the fire, according to WLUC’s account of the police release.
The deceased man’s family has been notified. Neither man’s name has been released, and the fire’s cause remains under investigation.
